Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes, or contributed to group efforts over time.
What is being a leader mean? A leader is someone who leads something or does something to help organize or do something. An example of my leadership experience has been when I got promoted at work to become a Crew trainer. To me, this was big just because now I would have to step up and be more than just an employee but a leader to all the new employees. They would have to follow me around and I would teach them all the things that needed to be done to be able to be prepared for this job. To me, this was a great experience because it would show my managers that I was capable of doing more than just expected. I felt that it was a chance to show the new workers how things should be done and not being scared of going into work not knowing what to do or anything. Being a leader to others felt great just because my manager believed that I was capable of being to train others without their help.
Describe how you have taken advantage of a significant educational opportunity or worked to overcome an educational barrier you have faced.
My sophomore year I was really worried but failing biology not because of me but because we had about 3 different biology teachers. Our first teacher quit on us and our next two teachers were subs that had no idea what to do in bio. When finally our last teacher came along and she actually knew what she was doing. This was an educational barrier because I wasn't planning on failing any classes my sophomore year. This was big to me because my thing is I really want to get into college and I thought maybe failing bio would put me a class behind and I wouldn't be able to take chemistry. I was already behind a semester so I thought how would I catch up. Will I had to stay after school even come in earlier on Wednesday just so I could try to catch up and not fail. This was just hard because it was so difficult to find a ride in the morning or for someone to pick me up after school. I finally did it and passed 2 semesters of biology in one semester because I really didn't want to have on my transcript that I didn't pass bio.
Describe your favorite academic subject and explain how it has influenced you.
All these years of school I have never really liked any subjects but that's until I got into high school. MY favorite subject has to be History just because it's so interesting to learn about. To me, I feel like history just always repeats itself but just in different ways. The teachers also have a huge impact on why history is my favorite subject, the way they teach it and explain it. History is just amazing like the way things happen to make such a big impact on the world and how every event impacts everything. It has influenced me because even though in my life nothing big happens like out in the world little things remind how my situation would be in the world. Knowing about the history and everything that goes on around the world is just great like knowing how little wars can cause a big war and that war just goes on from that. Just knowing about everything that goes on the world is just so great to know in what world we live in and to experience the new history that happens every day.
Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic achievement?
One of the most significant challenges that I have faced was the day I almost lost my parents in a really bad car accident. This was huge to me because I knew from that day on I would have to take responsibility for my sister. So many things were going through my head that day. My parents survived, but for those couple months that they were in recovery were probably the hardest months of my life. My dad was disabled at that moment so it was only my mom working at the time. But after that no income was coming in, so how was I supposed to do it for me and the family. There were challenges like bills, food, and transportation. I still didn’t have a job at the moment and my mom couldn’t work either. All we had was the money that my parents had saved. This affected my academic achievement because I had to miss lots of days of school to help my parents with phone calls or make doctor appointments. I was falling behind in most of my classes not just days but weeks behind. I just thought to myself how I would be able to catch up in work. I finally asked my aunt for help if she can miss work to go with them to their appointments or help us around with a ride. She did, this was a challenging stage in my life just because at the time I was a freshman and really couldn't do anything to help with bills or transportation. I finally overcame this challenge because I told my parents that they had to try and get better not just for them but also for us because it was affecting us as much as them.
Who I Am Today
Many people ask why you are the way you are or why do you act like that and many more questions having to do with the way you act. The person I am today is based off an event that forever will have a huge effect on me and the reasons why I do and act certain ways. I am a very sensitive and emotional person due to this event.
This event took place February 11, 2014, around 5:30 pm on a Tuesday. This day was the day I almost lost my Parents and my brother. They had a very bad car accident on Hwy 65 on their way home. That moment I had got the phone call from my mom saying “I love you and take care of your sister; I’ll talk to you soon.”
At that moment I knew something bad had happened, my mom isn’t the type of person to say the words “I love you.” As I am trying to figure out what had happened, my sister comes into the room yelling “Jailene my mom, my dad, and Albert got in a car accident’
My response was “Sierra what are you talking about? My mom just called me”
She answered in a sad tone “I don’t know Jailene, but I and my grandma are on our way over there.” I got up as quick as I could get my shoes and run out the door.
The way to the scene was terrifying I was just asking myself why this had to happen to us the day of my grandma’s birthday. As we arrived at the scene all I could see was smoke in the air, ambulance, cops, people surrounding a flamed up car, and most importantly seeing 3 bodies on the side of the road laying there like dead people. The whole sky had looked black and as if the smoke had been going on for a while. Our car was red and all I had seen when we arrived was the car burning the car was literally in flames. At that insistent, I had a feeling that I had lost my parents and I was alone in this world. I thought to myself how someone could survive a car accident when a car is in flames.
As soon as we got off the car my first reaction was to run and see my family. As I got to where they were at all I could see is them laying there and doing nothing. I was just hoping everything was fine and that they could still be by my side. We got to the emergency room we waited a couple of hours when they finally came out and saying that everything was fine and that they were going to be a little beat up. At that moment I knew I would still have my parents by my side no matter what.
Ever since that day I have tried to help my parents with as much as I could. I became more responsible, I try to help with as much as I can and most importantly to be the pest person and role model for my younger sister. Ever since that day I learned that you need to appreciate everyone and everything around you because you never know when it’s the last time you will see or talk to them again. This was a huge impact on me because I knew that if I would ever lose my parents before I had my life set I wouldn’t know what to do. I realized that you always have to be there for people no matter what or the situation because you never know what’s going on with them. This has shaped me to be who I am today because now I know to never judge someone because I have no idea what they are going through. Also to always end a conversation as if it were your last conversation with someone. Always appreciate everything and everyone no matter what.
